WHAT IS ANXIETY?

What Causes Anxiety?

The combination of factors which result in an individual developing an anxiety disorder differ from person to person. However, there are some major factors that have been identified, which include biological/genetic factors, psychological factors and lifestyle/stress related factors.

Anxiety & Avoidance

When you feel anxious, or anticipate feeling anxious, it makes sense that you will do things to help reduce your anxiety fast. A common trap people fall in to when trying to reduce the anxiety is attempting to avoid the feared situation altogether. This avoidance instantly decreases the anxiety because you have not put yourself in a distressing situation. However, while avoidance dampens anxiety in the short term you are more likely to worsen and reinforce the anxiety in the long term.
