STAGES OF CHANGE
The costs of the problem behavior (such as alcohol or drug use) are not yet recognized by the individual. At this stage they are in denial and are not yet considering changing their behavior. PRECONTEMPLATION The individual is experiencing ambivalence about change. At this stage they can see reasons to change their behavior, but are still hesitant to make the change. The problem behavior continues at the same rate in this stage. CONTEMPLATION The individual has decided to change their behavior. At this stage they begin to think about how to do so, and will begin to make minor changes towards their goal, but they might not have completely ended the problematic behavior. PREPARATION Here significant steps are taken to end the problem behavior. The individual might be working to avoid triggers, reaching out for help, or taking other steps to avoid giving in to the urges of their use. ACTION The changes made during the action stage are now maintained. The individual may continue to face some challenges, but at this point they have successfully changed their behavior for a significant period of time. MAINTENANCE After making changes there will be some individuals who will relapse and return to their previous problem behavior. This can happen at any time or stage during the previous steps. Not everyone will experience relapse, but there is always a risk that this will happen. RELAPSE
