Exercise 10: Asking Open Ended Questions

The goal of this exercise is to help you engage in meaningful dialogue with your internal parts by asking open-ended questions. This practice encourages deeper exploration and understanding of each part's experiences, needs, and perspectives.

Instructions

Step 1: Create a Quiet and Comfortable Environment Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can sit or lie down without interruptions. Ensure that you are in a relaxed position and that your body is fully supported. Step 2: Prepare Your Mind Take a few moments to settle in and close your eyes. Focus on your breath, taking slow, deep inhales and exhales. Allow yourself to become fully present in the moment. Step 3: Set an Intention Set an intention for this exercise. You might say to yourself, "My intention is to practice using open-ended questions with my inner critic to further understand it’s intentions." Step 4: Choose a Part to Engage With Select one part that you would like to engage with. This could be a part that you feel is particularly active or one that you identified in previous exercises. Step 5: Invite the Part to Speak In your mind, invite the part to come forward and express itself. You might say, "I would like to understand you better. Please share with me what you feel and need."
